Tips For Treating Back Injuries

If you feel discomfort during any activity or at any other time, listen to your body, as it is probably signaling a potential problem. You should discontinue the aggravating activity immediately. Soreness, twinges and spasms are warning signs. In the event you feel any of these symptoms, as soon as possible, apply crushed ice in a plastic bag, a bag of frozen peas, or a frozen gel pack for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. After each application, allow the skin temperature return to normal. You may do this as often as once every two hours during the first 24 to 48 hours, and we recommend scheduling an appointment with our office so we can evaluate whether any further treatment is needed. We can usually see you the same day!
Until your appointment, if you are continuing to feel pain, find a position of comfort, preferably by either lying on your back with your feet and lower legs elevated on pillows, lying on your stomach with one or more pillows under your hips, or lying on your side with a pillow between your knees. You may use ice on your back while resting in a comfortable position. Avoid lifting and forward bending activities if you have any pain whatsoever.
