It is best to sleep on a firm mattress that is comfortable and does not sag. The best position to sleep in as far as your spine is concerned is the fetal position, on your side. We also recommend that you place a pillow between your knees to position them closer to parallel in order to reduce the pressure on your lower back. If you are like many people and you sleep on your back, place a pillow underneath your knees, raising your legs slightly. A good cervical pillow is also recommended for under your head and neck to help maintain the normal cervical curvature. Please contact us to learn more about cervical pillows, and so we can review your sleeping practice.
The worst position for sleep is on your stomach. Even with a firm mattress, sleeping on your stomach produces significant strain on the lower back. If you are a stomach sleeper, try alternating between your stomach and your side to minimize the strain on your back. You may find that the reduced strain actually provides for a more restful night’s sleep, and that you quickly adapt to becoming a side-sleeper.
